British Gas fight over gas bills

Published: 12/05/2008

British Gas is embroiled in a legal battle with the provider of its IT system, which it says produced inaccurate bills, the Times has reported.

The company is suing consultancy, Accenture, which recommended the energy supplier to introduce "Project Jupiter", a customer billing service.

"An independent analysis of the billing system has concluded that Accenture was responsible for fundamental errors in the design and implementation of the system," the paper reported a spokesperson for the energy company saying.

"British Gas has been left with no option but to pursue legal redress against Accenture."

The billing system was meant to unite records for customers with gas and electricity accounts, but led to a record number of complaints.

Accenture denies it was to blame, claiming British Gas' owner, Centrica, "is only trying to shift the blame for a situation it created".

Rising utility bills are a worry for people struggling to pay their mortgage and keep up with the pace of inflation.
