Many holidaymakers 'avoid travel insurance'

Published: 24/12/2008

While many will be escaping Britain over the festive period one in three people fail to take out travel insurance before they venture abroad, a new study has found.

Nationwide questioned 1,000 people and found that most have no suitable place to lack valuables when they go away.

Robin Bailey, the lender's insurance director, said: "It is astounding that people are prepared to take such a gamble when traveling abroad."

The study found 89 per cent of people aged 25-34 took out cover, but only a fifth of the group aged 35-44 bothered with it.

Its research found that 36 per cent kept valuables with them when traveling, however, one in ten stashed them in a drawer and two per cent just left them lying on the bedside table.

The study also found that despite more international trips, only 30 per cent of holidaymakers took out annual cover, with most preferring to opt for single trip insurance.
