Many putting caps on spending over Christmas

Published: 22/12/2008

In an effort to curb spending on Christmas this year many are putting a cap on the amount they spend on family and friends, Halifax has found.

Results found that the average spending cap was £33.26, although people aged 16-24 were willing to spend more (£51.46) and 35-44 year olds were spending less (£25.15).

Mike Regnier, head of banking at Halifax, said: "For many, a sensible spending cap is a great way to cut the cost of Christmas and still manage to buy presents for all our family and friends."

The category to fall the most was friends, with 50 per cent saying that they intended to spend less on them this year.

Neighbours also suffer, with only five per cent of people intending to spend more this year, and 44 per cent intending to spend less.

Nearly half of those surveyed said they put a limit on the amount they spend simply so they could make shopping easier.
