Despite many thinking that the reduction on VAT would help spending at Christmas, an expert has suggested that other taxes are affecting bank balances. Debbie Jennings, VAT director at PKF accounts and business advisers, said that one way of avoiding taxes is to go on a booze cruise. "You can bring home an almost limitless amount of booze and cigarettes if you go across on the ferry to France," she said. "Obviously you have to pay for the petrol when you use your car or hire a van but, for personal consumption, that's why so many people having a party go over to France to one of these supermarkets or one of these specially set up places around the Calais area." According to PKF, the only way to avoid tax at Christmas is to eat sprouts and read a book, with the likes of whiskey, petrol and cigars seeing huge levels of tax. Advice from Virgin Media as to how to budget this Christmas includes writing a list or must-buy items, shop online to get the best bargains and make your own Christmas cards. ![]() |
