AA urges chancellor against further fuel duty

Alistair Darling has been urged not to add further levies on fuel in tomorrow's Pre-Budget report. AA motoring insurance issued a reminder to the chancellor that fuel duty has risen by 5.84p per litre since last year's Budget. The minister has already vowed to increase fuel duty by 1p per litre each year until 2013. Edmund King, president of AA, said that "petrol and diesel in the UK are already heavily taxed so we don't want to see the chancellor pulling any tricks out of his box to hammer the motorist". He added: "This could hinder economic recovery because as a nation we are dependent on road transport for getting goods to our shops and ports and for 90 per cent of passenger travel." According to the insurer, fuel duty adds an extra £87.43 in petrol costs to each UK car per year and a £69.48 increase in [to] the yearly cost of diesel fuel. © Copyright |
