Current address fraud hitting students

Published: 12/06/2007

Students could be putting their finances at risk due to their mail being received at multi-occupation residences, credit reference agency Equifax states.

So-called current address fraud is on the rise and those most at risk are students who are occupying large halls of residences and therefore sharing an address with many others.

One way around this worrying scenario is for students to check their statements so that they have a handle on all of the outgoings from their bank account, according to Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax.

When speaking about what could be done to combat the fraud, Mr Munroe also added: "Specifically, for example, if mail that you normally get turning up on time…is not turning up at all.

"Just making sure that when you should get a bank statement, you're getting it, or a credit card, for example, if you applied for something. Disposing of your mail still remains a priority."

Big cities such as London and Manchester were cited as the main areas where bank accounts were most under threat from the fraudsters.
