Cold spell leads consumers to consider energy bills

Published: 18/01/2010

A recent survey has found that around two-thirds of consumers are more inclined to pay attention to their fuel bills during particularly chilly weather.

Responding to a survey from consumer group Which?, 65 per cent of consumers said that the recent old weather had made them think more about their energy bills.

When asked what action they had taken, almost a third said they had switched suppliers or called their supplier to ensure they were on the cheapest tariff available.

Martyn Hocking, editor of Which?, commented: "There's little choice but to turn the heating up when you're faced with cold weather, so it's inevitable that people are going to worry about their bills."

People were also found to be making use of sensible alternatives to avoid increasing their heating bill.

The survey found that 84 per cent took put more clothes on, using the added layers to keep warm.

Other popular options included having a warm drink or simply staying in bed.

With average household energy bills now well over £1,000, comparing suppliers and taking precautions to save money has become more important than ever.
