Credit crunched Britons turn to "in-tertainment"

Published: 27/10/2009

Abbey has spotted a new "in-tertainment" trend in the UK.

According to the firm, Britons are saving a total of £3.9 billion a month - equivalent to £89 per person - of their personal incomes by spending more nights in.

Abbey also said that 57 per cent of paid-for entertainments were enjoyed at home in the UK.

These include DVDs, dinner parties and takeaways.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investments at Abbey, commented: "The recession has made people far savvier when it comes to saving money and millions of us have worked out that in-tertaining is a great way to cut back without missing out."

Home comforts were also preferred by many Britons on holiday leave from work.

According to Abbey, as many as 31 per cent of employees will spend more than 75 per cent of their annual leave at home, rather than away on holiday.

Over one third of this group also said that the decision had been taken due to a need to save money and avoid adverse credit.
