Crime risks for rural homes highlighted

Published: 22/12/2009

People living in rural areas of the UK are putting themselves at risk of falling victim to crime by not being as security-conscious as their counterparts in urban locations.

That is according to a new poll from Halifax Home Insurance, which found that almost one in three Britons living in the countryside leave their houses unlocked on most days.

In contrast, just one in ten people residing in urban areas do the same.

The study also revealed that 70 per cent of rural inhabitants do not use a burglar alarm, putting them at an increased risk of theft.

Halifax found that one in eight people living in the countryside has been affected by vandalism or burglary in the last 12 months.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Rural residents should be especially vigilant during this festive season, with burglars aware of the increased value of home contents nestled under the Christmas tree."
