Lost luggage soars by 85 per cent

Published: 16/08/2007

Insurance companies are facing soaring claims figures as growing numbers of travellers lose luggage, travel insurers Insureandgo have revealed.

A massive 85 per cent surge in the number of claims registered between January and June 2007 compared to last year's figures suggests more and more customers are victims of airport inefficiency.

One bag was lost every two hours by insureandgo customers over the six-month period to June, with average claims topping £200 in value.

It is not clear whether altered security arrangements at UK airports may have contributed to the losses, but the number of bags lost within Europe rose by one-fifth compared to the first half of 2006, Association of European Airlines (AEA) statistics show.

Rising numbers of people choosing to holiday overseas are contributing to luggage loss, commented a spokesperson for insurers Norwich Union, which this week reported 40 per cent more claims from lost luggage in the first six months of 2007.

"Busier airports and airlines" mean "more mishandling of baggage", Suzi Fenn told BBC One's 'Breakfast' programme.

"It is up to the airlines and airport authorities to limit this issue," urged insureandgo's managing director, Perry Wilson, adding that insurers would continue to compensate customers where appropriate.
