One in four lacks home contents insurance

Published: 17/10/2007

Homeowners are being reminded of the importance of ensuring they have adequate contents insurance for their dwelling.

The Association of British Insurers pointed out that one in four people currently lack the cover, leaving them exposed to the risk of financial hardships should they fall victim to a burglary or serious accident.

Commenting on the worryingly high level of uninsured homes, spokesperson Kelly Ostler pointed out that bricks and mortar insurance is a different matter as a majority of mortgage lenders oblige borrowers to take out such premiums.

That is not the case for contents insurance, however, meaning that many UK homeowners - especially those in lower income brackets - are neglecting the cover.

Ms Ostler added that how high a given contents insurance premium is will depend on what area the house is located in, as well as what home security measures have been installed.

In 2005/06 there was a total of 733,000 domestic burglaries in England and Wales.
