One million E.ON customers are to receive smart meters by March 2014 ahead of the government's rollout from 2018. The utility firm has already installed 35,000 devices in UK homes as part of a series of trials and will install a further 100,000 this year. Households can use the devices to give them information on their energy use and have more control over gas and electricity bills. Zoe McLeod, energy expert at Consumer Focus, commented on the announcement: "Some customers will welcome the chance to get a smart meter early to get accurate bills and help them save on their energy. "However, full consumer protections aren't in place yet so it is very important that E.ON and other suppliers installing smart meters go the extra mile now to make sure consumers have a positive experience." She noted that as British Gas is also running a similar scheme, smart meters will be in at least three million homes by 2014. © Copyright |
