Insurance companies are bracing for an expected rise of 180 per cent in the number of house fires over the holidays. Fireplaces, scented candles and the soaring use of ovens all contribute to the increase in the blazes, according to More Than. UK residents are advised to never leave candles unattended and to ensure that all decorations such as tinsels or Christmas cards are kept away from any sources of heat which may cause them to catch alight. Turning off tree lights and outdoor decorations before you go to sleep and when the house is empty is also highlighted as a good way to avoid house fires over the holidays. Annette Lepper, head of More Than Home Insurance, said: "Christmas Day is a time for enjoyment, friends and family. We would encourage homeowners to take a few simple precautions to make sure that you don't let a fire ruin your celebration." © Copyright |
