A need for space and a desire to move up the housing ladder have been found to be the most popular reasons for moving house, a new survey revealed. More than 217,000 people were motivated to move up the property ladder and nearly 110,000 buyers changed residence because they had found their dream home, according to a poll by Abbey. The study also found that tens of thousands of people were moving due to crises in their lives. More than 25,000 people said they were forced to change homes after bereavement or due to the ending of a relationship. Nearly 100,000 said they had moved to escape horrible neighbours. Nici Aughlam-Gardiner, director of mortgages at Abbey, said that despite some negative moments "people are still moving for positive reasons". She added: "We have seen a 50 per cent increase in the number of people applying for mortgages to buy a new home in recent months compared to the average monthly applications for purchase mortgages for the first half of the year." Abbey also found that seven per cent of homeowners are currently looking to move house. © Copyright |
