Tips on insulating your home this Christmas

Published: 11/12/2009

A leading insurer has offered some tips for insulating properties against the cold weather to prevent the damage the elements can cause.

Problems such as frozen and burst pipes or boiler breakdowns are often not anticipated, with only 13 per cent of UK residents having the necessary home emergency insurance to cover such events, according to Direct Line.

Insulating pipes, fixing dripping taps and keeping the heating on low during extremely cold days are all advised to stop pipes from freezing.

Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line home insurance, said that "homeowners shouldn't forget the importance of taking precautions to protect homes against wintry weather".

He added: "A few quick and easy jobs undertaken now could prevent damage such as pipes bursting. However, if something does go wrong, knowing you can call on an experienced tradesperson to fix the problem can provide significant peace of mind."

The insurer also recommends making sure that homes have sufficient loft insulation and checking that have not been damaged or disturbed during the course of the year.
