savers urged to think small when scouting for big rates

Published: 21/02/2009

Financial Times (Money) – 21st February 2009

Savers achieving a positive return on their money in real terms are becoming a rare breed, in spite of falling inflation.

The best instant access savings account rate – 2.45 per cent – is from Beverley Building Society, which operates just two branches in Beverley and Pocklington in East Yorkshire.

While this is true, Andrew Hagger of Moneynet.co.uk pointed out that savers interested in the offers can’t afford to wait long. Rates from smaller providers tend to be short-lived.
