Credit card companies top junk mail list

Published: 10/10/2006
Recent research has shown that credit card companies top the list of groups advertising their products by sending so called 'junk mail' to homes.

The seemingly ever-increasing amounts of mail being sent to homes has sparked questions about responsible lending.

Financial provider MBNA Europe's press officer Pawl Lawler tackled the question of responsible lending by explaining that it wasn't "in our interests to lend money to people who can't afford to repay it".

He added: "We have rigorous checks in place to make sure that those who borrow can repay their loans or credit cards. We look at their repayment history with other credit card companies and take that into account."

Under existing rules, postmen are allowed to deliver only three unaddressed items per week to any home, although Royal Mail are believed to be planning moves to scrap the limit.
