Part 3 - How To Survive The 'Credit Crunch'

INSURANCE

Insurance comes in many guises and is a costly necessity that few of us can avoid if we want to protect ourselves, loved ones and property. However, with a little bit of time and effort you really can get those premiums down and keep a bit more cash in your pocket. Here we look at the main types of insurance but the same basic principles apply to most types of insurance;

  • Motor Insurance - As well as shopping around for cover it's crucial that you make sure your policy meets your needs. Here are a few tips that may help reduce your premium

    • Experiment with different excesses. A higher excess (the amount you will have to pay if you make a claim) will reduce your premium but remember, if you do need to claim, the insurance company will not cover the excess.

    • Park off the road or in a garage - If you can get your car on a driveway or in a garage overnight you could reduce your premium.

    • Consider Third Party Fire & Theft - If your car is of low value then you might want to consider TPFT insurance rather than comprehensive. This will reduce your premium but remember if you are in an accident which is your fault you will not be able to claim for damage to your vehicle.

    • Pay the Premium Annually - You will usually pay extra if you choose to pay your premium monthly rather than in a lump sum.

    • Buy online - You can often make a saving by cutting out your broker and buying online and what's more you can compare most of the market with just one search.
