Brits urged to safeguard bank accounts while on holiday
The importance of protecting bank accounts against identity fraud has been reiterated for holidaymakers.
CIFAS - the UK's fraud prevention service - said it is essential people make sure sensitive mail is not left unattended in the event of their absence, or that debit or credit cards are not able to be swiped and copied.
Figures from the company indicated that 46 per cent of all frauds recorded in the first half of the year were made up of identity fraud cases, with account takeover fraud making up ten per cent.
"Lowering one's guard during holidays could ... lead to holidaymakers returning to a far greater expense than they had budgeted for," Richard Hurley, communications manager with CIFAS, remarked.
Tips for jet-setters were recently provided by Equifax, which suggested using work phone numbers and addresses when checking into hotels, avoiding writing pin numbers down, keeping ID separate from credit and debit cards, and wearing a concealed money belt to carry valuables and cards.
