Comparing and switching can save you money in 2010

A guide to saving money in the new year has been published by a leading consumer group.

Published by Which?, it includes top tips on cutting your spending in 2010.

The group advises that consumers consult the things they use everyday to see whether they can save money, such as their energy supplier.

Research by Which? showed that some households could save an average of £263 a year if they switched to a more cost efficient supplier.

Similarly, the average credit card APR rate in the UK is almost 17 per cent, but with many deals as low as zero per cent, consumers could save up to £500 a year by switching companies.

Martyn Hocking, the editor of Which?, said: "If you make just one New Year's resolution this year, make it that you'll face your finances head on. Check what you're paying for goods and services, and shop around for the best deals.

"Don't settle for mediocre service either - vote with your feet and take your business elsewhere if you're not happy."

Other advice from the consumer group included comparing the prices of petrol in your area to see where you could save additional money on fuel.
