Pensions expert urges Brits to buy savings certificates
Saga director-general Dr Ros Altmann has called on Britons, particularly hard-hit savers, to buy savings certificates while they are still around on the market.
Welcoming the announcement by NS&I that they are to bring back five-year index-linked savings certificates after nearly a year of being withdrawn from public purchase, the pensions expert said that the products will allow investors "some tax-free protection against the ravages of inflation".
The certificates will pay 0.5 per cent above inflation, tax-free up to a maximum investment of £15,000.
Dr Altmann said that they are a safe way of saving and can offer higher interest rates than currently available on the market.
Last July the certificates were withdrawn because they were so popular. This time around, Dr Altmann said that there will be "huge demand from investors desperate for a safe place to shelter their money from inflation", which will lead them to be withdrawn when NS&I reaches its target, so savers must act fast.
