Millions in Christmas Eve rush

With Christmas just around the corner, the last minute shoppers are expected to descend on stores today, with 13.3 million people having left their present buying to the last minute, new research has revealed.

Nearly one-fifth of adults will be doing their shopping today, spending an estimated £13.7 billion, according to the report by Sainsbury's Finance.

The study also found that approximately 18 per cent of these sales will take place on credit cards, equating to roughly £246 million.

However, many suppliers on the high street do not offer good credit card deals, which means shoppers are missing out on potential rewards.

Stuart McKeggie, head of Sainsbury's Credit Cards said: "Once again there looks set to be a stampede of shoppers on Christmas Eve as many people leave their shopping to the last minute before Christmas. However, some people will be put off by the freezing weather conditions."

He added: "In these prudent times, we believe people are looking at ways to stretch their budgets and take advantage of some of the great deals on the high street and in supermarkets particularly.

"With our card they'll benefit further by earning points as they spend, points they can then redeem in store to purchase their last minute Christmas dinner items or family's presents."

It was also found that men were likely to be buying their presents last minute, with 19 per cent of them hitting the shops on Christmas Eve.
