Energy price hike 'could leave many people cold this winter'
Increases in energy bills could result in many households facing the cold this winter, Consumer Focus has said.
It stated that a large number of people could be affected by steep fuel bills after EDF Energy announced that it will increase its gas costs by 15.4 per cent and electricity fees by 4.5 per cent.
Mike O'Connor, chief executive of Consumer Focus, said this hike will mean that the average energy bill will total £1,300.
He stated: "This not unexpected news means more consumers making tough decisions as we head into the colder months and millions of people cutting back on other essentials if they want to keep warm."
However, Mr O'Connor noted that EDF Energy's changes to its gas and electricity costs have been smaller than other energy suppliers.
This news may motivate more people to look at ways to reduce the amount of energy they use, including improving the insulation to their properties.
Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, recently gave encouragement to homeowners considering this, saying it is more "convenient" than many people think.
