Households 'face all-time high fuel prices'

Households are set to face further struggles to pay their electricity and gas bills after npower announced it is going to raise its costs.

Earlier this week (August 16th), the firm revealed there will be an increase of 15.7 per cent for gas bills and 7.2 per cent for electricity prices from October 1st this year.

Adam Scorer, director of external affairs at Consumer Focus, noted that while this fuel price hike will "not come as a surprise" to many people, "they will still be hard to swallow for hard-pressed consumers".

He stated that as wholesale costs are still low, a number of customers are angry that they have to pay high prices.

Chief commercial officer at RWE npower Kevin Miles commented that the causes for the energy bill hikes are the reduced quantities of North Sea gas, tumultuous world events and environmental costs.

He went on to say npower's costs are still "lower than those announced by any other major supplier".
