Households 'need education' to make homes more energy efficient

Homeowners need to be informed of ways they can implement energy-saving features in their properties in order to save them money on fuel bills.

This is the opinion of Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, who said people need to be shown how they can directly reduce energy costs by making sure their home is properly insulated.

"For a relatively modest investment, they can make big savings over the long term," said Mr Leech.

He commented that homeowners will be able to reduce their bills year after year with these measures, adding: "This is particularly important when you think of the increase in utility prices."

This advice could prove especially useful after EDF Energy revealed it will increase its costs for gas by 15.4 per cent and for electricity by 4.5 per cent over the winter months.

According to Mike O'Connor, chief executive of Consumer Focus, this will mean average energy bills will be £1,300.
