Insulation 'is key to keeping houses warm'
Homeowners looking for ways to cut their gas and electricity bills have been reminded of the importance of getting their property properly insulated.
Jeremy Hawksley, director general at the Oil Firing Technical Association (Oftec), said lagging the loft, as well as making sure windows are either modern or double glazed helps keep heat in.
For those who want to reduce the amount of fuel they use significantly, Mr Hawksley suggested using a condensing oil boiler.
The Oftec specialist said they are between 15 and 20 per cent more efficient than other boilers, stating: "If people have an old boiler at the end of its life ... they should replace it with a condensing boiler."
More people may be inclined to follow Mr Hawksley's advice after npower recently revealed it is hiking its electricity and gas bills by 7.2 per cent and 15.7 per cent respectively from next month.
