Insurers 'could help with electrical safety in the home'

Householders should be rewarded by insurers for boosting electrical safety in their homes, one specialist has argued.

Cherry Read, head of communications and campaigns at the Electrical Safety Council (ESC), said her organisation has held talks with companies in order to urge them to offer discounts to those who follow certain measures.

According to Ms Read, the main stumbling block is that many insurance companies do not feel there is enough of a premium in the domestic market for it to be worth doing.

"Half of all domestic fires are caused by electricity," she added. "Around 80 per cent of people think there should be a duty on landlords to do an electrical check on the installation."

There certainly needs to be a lot more done in terms of raising awareness, the expert stated.

The Electrical Safety Council advises parents in particular to take measures around the home to protect children, such as keeping youngsters away from plugs and sockets when wet.
