M&S Home Insurance helps consumers go green
Householders who take out a policy with M&S Home Insurance may now benefit from two environmentally-friendly features in the event that they have to make a claim.
Firstly, policyholders who make a claim for a fridge freezer, refrigerator, washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher will now be offered a replacement appliance with an A rating for energy-efficiency.
Furthermore, any homeowner whose property has to be rebuilt because of severe damage will be entitled to use sustainable materials in order to improve the environmental credentials of their home.
M&S Home Insurance believes that consumers will welcome the move, as a recent survey by the insurer found that 61 per cent of people would be interested in environmentally-friendly policies.
David Wells, the company's head of insurance, confirmed: "Feedback from householders has told us that they want an insurance policy which helps reduce the environmental impact of their home in the event of a claim."
Mat Colmer, head of housing and supply chain for the Energy Saving Trust, added: "It's important that companies take the lead with ambitious and positive products and packages when it comes to reducing the UK's carbon emissions."
The motor insurance market already has a number of 'green' options available to drivers, such as specialist insurer ibuyeco, which makes a small donation to an environmental concern for every policy sold.
Meanwhile, The Co-operative Insurance offsets 20 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions for every vehicle it insures, while offering premium discounts for fuel-efficient cars.
