Older gap year travellers 'fail to obtain suitable insurance'

While a rising number of older people are taking extended breaks in other countries, too few obtain adequate insurance before heading abroad, an expert has warned.

Figures published by Post Office Travel Insurance has highlighted the fact that one in four over-55s are considering taking a gap year within the next two years.

It also found that 25 per cent of those taking a 'grey gap year' have tracked down a policy suitable for this form of break, with six per cent taking out no cover at all.

Sarah Munro, head of travel insurance at the Post Office, has highlighted the fact that age is no longer a barrier for those looking to experience other cultures and to spread their wings.

She said it is worrying that so few holidaymakers actually obtain a suitable policy before taking their break.

"If you're going abroad for an extended period of time the most vital areas to be insured for are medical treatment, repatriation in case you need to be flown home and cancellation in case you fall ill and are unable to travel," Ms Munro warned.

Earlier this month, a Candidmoney.com spokesperson warned last-minute holidaymakers to beware of credit card charges, describing the rates paid by tourists as "daylight robbery".
