Students 'should be more aware of risks of not getting insurance'
Many students do not consider the risks involved in not taking out insurance policies when they head off to university.
This is the opinion of John Baker, head of general insurance at Nationwide, who said a large number of young people do not protect their possessions, despite taking expensive equipment with them when they move away from home, including iPhones, iPods and laptops.
He was speaking as Nationwide revealed that 40 per cent of students bring more than £500 worth of belongings when they go to university.
Mr Baker stated that most people who fail to take out insurance do not believe anything will happen to their possessions.
"Unfortunately, the statistics show that around 15 per cent of students have experienced something being stolen from them," he said.
He went on to advise students to take out insurance so that "if something does happen to them they are adequately protected".
