Debt problems 'being shared more willingly'

People who may benefit from a debt consolidation loan may be among those more willing to share their problems with their partners.

A study by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) has revealed the number of people approaching it for help who have kept their debt woes secret from their other half has been declining in recent years.

In 2010 the tally was 14,071, compared with 16,424 in 2009 and 17,477 in 2008, with the charity saying this is good news as keeping debt secret can put strain on a relationship.

Director of external affairs at CCCS Delroy Corinaldi suggested the trend may be down to a change in attitudes caused by the credit crunch.

He said: "It may be that people are more aware of the difficulties that debt can cause and therefore more willing to talk about any problems they may have."

Another party those in debt could benefit from telling about their problems is the creditors, a property sector expert has said.

Director at MyMortgageDirect Catherine Hearnden said mortgage providers are generally willing to be "compassionate" to those struggling with repayments, as they are under pressure not to repossess homes in such cases.
