Students advised to be proactive with finances

Students worried about how they will fund the cost of their course and their living expenses while at university have been advised to be proactive with their finances.

Steve Burford, founder of Wealthystudent.co.uk, a finance website helping students manage their money, recommended making a visit to centres in the union for advice.

"You can't not think about money at university, [but] it's important you think about every pound you spend," he said.

"Equally, you shouldn't let it affect your state of mind in terms of getting worried about it. Worry enough that you don’t spend over your budget, but not so much that you fret every second of every day - find the balance."

Universities minister David Willetts has announced more support for undergraduates through the use of maintenance grants, which will be increased for the first time in three years from September.

If their institution is not funded by The Higher Education Funding Council for England, students can borrow up to £6,000 to pay towards tuition fees.
