Govt launches campaign to help student finance

A new campaign has been launched to inform students about where they can find financial help ahead of starting university in September.

The Direct.gov.uk microsite will explain how the tuition loan system will work and will also provide information on how to apply for a student loan, detail government support and give advice on managing living costs.

It comes ahead of the increase in tuition fees, which will affect all new undergraduates from September 2012. Universities will charge between £6,000 and £9,000 a year for courses, putting a strain on many people's finances.

"We must ensure that prospective students are not put off applying to university because they do not understand the new system. Going to university depends on ability - not the ability to pay," commented universities and science minister David Willetts.

"A university degree is an excellent investment in your future. Students and their families need to know that applying for student finance is quick and easy and can be done online," he added.
