Half of Brits regret not paying off their debts in 2010

Over half (53 per cent) of Britons regret not paying off their debts quicker, a survey of the top financial regrets of 2010 show.

The poll by first direct also revealed that 37 per cent of consumers regret not saving for retirement earlier, while 18 per cent feel guilty about spending too much over Christmas.

Many people are also unhappy with the level of debt they have on their credit card or loan, with 82 per cent stating this, the survey showed, while 79 per cent said they were unhappy with not having taken advantage of tax free investments.

"Even in the current low interest rate environment, in which we find ourselves, debt is still a drag," commented Nick Bamford, chief executive of Informed Choice.

He said that it will be harder for people to clear their debts over the next couple of years. This could lead some people to be refused credit.

Mr Bamford advised struggling consumers to determine how they are going to spend the money available to them each month.
