How Clean Is Your Clinic and How Would You Know?

30 Oct, 2026

British private healthcare standards are genuinely high. The CQC inspects thousands of registered providers every single year, and the vast majority will pass without any issues. But if it’s your first private appointment, for something like physiotherapy, a skin consultation, dental work or a minor procedure, you almost certainly won’t have checked the inspection report before walking through the door. You’ll look around and judge the place by what you can see and smell.

So what should you actually pay attention to, and what will separate a well-run clinic from one that’s quietly cutting corners?

Check the CQC Registration First

Before you book, look up the CQC’s online register. Any clinic offering regulated treatments in England will need to be listed there, and a valid registration means the place has at least met a baseline of safety and hygiene requirements.

It won’t guarantee perfection, but if a clinic should be on that register and isn’t, that’s a serious red flag before you’ve even stepped through the door.

What to Look for When You Walk In

Reception areas will reveal more than you’d expect. Look past the obvious things like clean floors and tidy chairs, and pay closer attention to the details that most people miss. Are the hand sanitiser dispensers actually full? Do staff wash or sanitise their hands every single time before touching shared equipment like blood pressure cuffs, or do they skip it when they think nobody’s watching? A well-trained team will do this on autopilot, and you’ll pick up on it fast.

Here’s where it really counts. Single-use items like gloves, needles, syringes and dressings should be opened from sealed packaging right in front of you, and reusable instruments should come from a sterilisation pouch or autoclave. If anything looks pre-opened or left out on a tray from an earlier patient, ask about it straight away. A good practitioner won’t mind at all.

Walls, Floors and Other Surfaces Matter More Than You Think

Walls can tell you a lot. Peeling paint or cracked tiles in a clinical space are a clear warning that infection control probably isn’t getting the focus it needs. Properly maintained treatment rooms will have smooth, sealed surfaces that staff can wipe down between patients, and many clinics will go a step further by fitting hygienic hospital cladding on their walls because PVC sheeting creates a non-porous, moisture-resistant barrier that won’t harbour bacteria at all.

Check the flooring too. Vinyl or sealed flooring is standard in clinical environments because it’s easy to disinfect, and if you spot carpet in a treatment room, it should raise immediate questions about how seriously the place takes cleanliness.

Cleaning Schedules and Visible Routines

Cleaning logs are another detail to notice. Many well-run clinics will display their cleaning schedules in shared areas, and if you see one posted up, it means someone on that team is held accountable for keeping standards up throughout the entire day, not just when the doors first open each morning. If a clinic doesn’t display one, that doesn’t automatically mean they’re falling short on hygiene. But visible schedules show confidence.

Watch what happens between appointments too. In a busy clinic, the gap between one patient leaving and the next one walking in is where corners get cut fastest. A practitioner who wipes down the treatment bed, changes the couch roll, sanitises their hands and swaps gloves before calling you through is doing the basics properly. One who waves you straight in while the last patient’s still putting their coat on probably isn’t giving that room the attention it needs between uses.

The Small Details Will Tell You Everything

Most private clinics in Britain run to a genuinely good standard. The ones that don’t will usually give themselves away through small but telling details: worn furniture, cluttered treatment rooms, half-empty sanitiser dispensers or staff who skip basic hand hygiene without a second thought.

Trust your gut on this. Look up the CQC register, read a few recent patient reviews, check for photos people have posted online, and ask the clinic directly about their infection control procedures if anything still concerns you. A clinic that takes hygiene seriously won’t hesitate to answer.
